At least seven people were killed and about 30 others missing, when two vehicles collided with each other, and one of them tumbled into a nearby river in Ashulia, on Tuesday morning. Seven bodies had been recovered until 4 pm, Ashulia Police Station officer-in-charge, Sheikh Badrul Alam, told The Independent.Two of deceased were identified as Abdul Rahman Babu (50) and Nabiullah (32). One of the vehicles, a bus, fell into the river, at around 9:45 am, near the toll plaza on Ashulia Road in Savar, while the other one, a human hauler, sped away.
The bus were carrying 10-12 extra passengers, said Gulam Mostofa, an injured passenger, who was on his way to Nabinagar.
The fire service and civil defence, and local residents, rushed to the scene. Later, the Bangladesh Navy reached the area to take part in the rescue operation.
Most of the passengers of the bus were injured as the vehicle struck a road divider, after hitting the human hauler. The injured were given first-aid at East West Medical College and Hospital, in Turag police station area.
Abdul Hai, deputy director of East West Medical College and Hospital, said Moshiur (32), Humayun Kabir (35), Tareq (30), Zillur Rahman (37), Mizan (25), Siddiqur Rahman (40), Gulam Mostofa (45), Foyez (22), Yasin Jahan (50), Nurul Amin (18), and Mainul Islam, were critically injured.
In another incident, a girl was crushed under the wheels of a bus, while she was trying to run away from a group of hartal supporters, at Chandana Intersection, on Tuesday. The deceased was identified as Sadia Sultana.
Witnesses said a group of hartal activists had torched a bus on the Dhaka-Tangail highway at the intersection. They also tried to vandalise several vehicles. As Sadia got hit by a brick-chip, she tried to run away from the picketers, only to be crushed by a speeding bus.
On receiving information, police recovered the body, and sent it for autopsy.
