Seven candidates submitted nomination papers on Sunday, the last day of submission, to contest for the mayoral post in the Sylhet City Corporation polls scheduled for June 15.
Of the seven mayoral aspirants, who submitted nomination papers, one is of the ruling Awami League, 4 of the main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party, 1 of Jamaat-e Islami and 1 independent, sources in the divisional election office said.
They are Sylhet city Awami League president Badar Uddin Ahmad Kamran, also the outgoing mayor, BNP city unit former president Ariful Haque Chowdhury, its vice-president Nasim Hossain and general secretary Abdul Kaiyum Jalali Panki and Swechchhasebak Dal central vice-president Shamsuzzaman Zaman, also the organisation’s district convener, detained Sylhet city Jamaat amir Ehsanul Mahbub Jubair and the lone independent candidate Salah Uddin Rimon, also an activist of Juba Dal, youth front of BNP, as he claimed, the sources said.
The city Jamaat leaders submitted the nomination paper on behalf of the unit amir Ehsanul Mahbub Jubair, who was arrested on March 17 from a guest house at Uttara in Dhaka on charge of his involvement with the attack on Shaheed Minar and clash with police in the city on February 22 that left a college student killed and more than 100 injured, the party sources said.
Zia Mancha former district convener Arif Ahmed Momtaz Rifa had collected a nomination paper of the mayoral candidate, but he did not submit it till Sunday 5:00pm, sources in the returning office said.
Besides, a total of 152 nomination papers against 27 posts of general ward councilors and 36 nomination papers against 9 reserved posts of female councilors were submitted by the provable aspirants in the upcoming SCC polls, the sources said.
