Chittagong is going through a severe gas crisis ever experienced before, paralysing industrial production as well as city life. Chittagong Chamber of Commerce and Industry has urged the energy advisor to prime minister Toufique-e-Elahi to take steps to put an end to the crisis, but there has been no improvement of the situation. Mahabubul Alam, president of CCCI said that all export-oriented industries in Chittagong came on the verge of elimination with severe gas crises, often forcing the factories to stop production.
He said that overseas orders might divert to other countries if the crisis continues for a long time.
Chittagong needs just 400 million cubic feet of gas to meet its daily demand while just 190 to 200 million is being provided daily, leaving the industries in a jeopardy, he added
Mahabub said that for Dhaka region there were 7 supply lines from Sylhet and Comilla while there is only one supply line for Chittagong, suggesting a negligence to Chittagong though it was declared the commercial capital of the country.
Managing Director of Karnaphuli Gas Distribution Company Limited Jameel Ahamed Aleem said that the pressure of gas gets reduced for the huge distance from Sylhet to Chittagong.
He assured to curb the gas crisis by December as the construction work of a new pipeline from Ashuganj to Bakhrabad will be completed by that time.
