Shaheed Asad Day will be observed today, commemorating his martyrdom this day in 1969 during the mass uprising against the Pakistani rulers that led the nation to independence.
On this day 40 years ago, Asaduzzaman was killed in police firing in front of Dhaka Medical College and Hospital while leading a protest demonstration.
Protests spread like wildfire following the killing hastening the downfall of dictator Ayub Khan.
The Bangladesh Nationalist Party chairperson, Khaleda Zia, in a statement paid tributes to Asad’s supreme sacrifice. ‘Asad laid down his life for a democratic Bangladesh. The best way to honour him is to institutionalise democracy and establish the basic and human rights of the people,’ Khaleda said. She asked the countrymen to make a united effort for protecting democracy.
Cultural and political organisations have chalked up programmes, including placing flowers at Asad Memorial in front of Dhaka Medical College Hospital and holding discussions on the occasion.
