A group exhibition titled ‘Shells and Souls’ by four young artists is being held at the Gallery Drik in Dhanmondi. The exhibition, inaugurated on October 9, will remain open from 5:00pm to 9:00pm everyday till October 15.
Asma Sultana Mita, Golam Faruque Sarker, Kazi Mahboob Hassan and Shamim Reza are displaying their recent artworks in four series at the show under the title Shells and Souls. The series include ‘Silent Poetry’ by Asma Sultana Mita, ‘Rag Picked Colour 100’ by Shamim Reza, ‘Ecce Homo’ by Kazi Mahboob Hassan and ‘Me and My Soul’ by Golam Faruque Sarker.
The artists have presented their ideas related to nature, love, dreams, conflicts and tradition in four different media.
Asma Sultana Mita has put importance on human emotions in her entire artworks. She has used water-based mixed media in her artworks and has refrained from controlling the flow of colours. She has created different shades of colours to express human thoughts.
Golam Faruque Sarker has narrated the untold stories of the people’s practice of humanity and inhumanity. The artworks titled ‘Red and Bird’ and ‘Me and My Soul’ are the examples.
In Sarker’s ‘Red and Bird’, viewers will see some human faces in the bodies of dogs that are looking at a pretty caged bird.
In ‘Me and My Soul’, he has tried to present the inner conflicts between body and soul by portraying a body with two faces.
The artist has depicted these figures in flat dimension, using vivid yellow and green.
Kazi Mahboob Hassan has presented unfulfilled human desires in his artworks through the lines drawn by pen and pencil. The desires in his artworks have been presented by black lines and white space. Women faces, hands and flower vases are the subjects in his artworks.
Shamim Reza has presented his ideas on canvas by illustrating ornamental decoration on cloths. He has used mixed media and patch work, following the country’s tradition of quilts in his artworks.
Asma Sultana Mita, Golam Faruque Sarker and Shamim Reza have completed their study from the fine arts faculty of Dhaka University and Kazi Mahboob Hassan had studied in Dhaka Medical College. The exhibition is the first group exhibition of the artists.
