About 300 leaders and activists of Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir, student wing of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, entered the Rajshahi University campus on Monday in a show of their strength,
spreading panic on the campus.
The Shibir activists entered the campus about three and a half years after they were ousted from the campus following clashes with Bangladesh Chhatra League, student wing of the ruling party that killed BCL activist Faruk Hossain on February 8 in 2010.
Witnesses said at least 300 Shibir activists, led by RU unit leader Azizur Rahman, took position at different points on the campus.
Later, they moved around the campus.
Proctor Tariqul Hasan said the situation was under control.
Motihar police officer-in-charge Ashit Kumar said additional police were deployed on the campus to avert any trouble.
Sources said Shibir supporters started moving around the campus after the victory of BNP-backed Rajshahi mayoral candidate Mosaddeque Hossain Bulbul.
BCL RU unit president Ahmed Ali alleged that the Shibir men were trying to destabilise the situation on the campus.
