With only two weeks left for Eid-ul-Fitr, the biggest festival of the Muslims, the Chittagong city people are now crowding the shopping malls to do their Eid shopping.
New Market, Mimi Super Market, Amin Centre, Aktharuzzamna Babu Centre, Centre Plaza Johur Hawkers Market, Sanmar Ocean City and all other big and small shopping malls of the city are now abuzz with shoppers.
The customers in the market were found busy shopping and the traders were found to be pleased with their sales.
Punjabi was the first choice of the male customers while the females were looking for the Indian dresses, said traders while talking about the ongoing trends of outfit.
‘Mimi Super Market is a traditional shopping mall for the aristocrat people. We are selling Indian saris for meeting the customer demand,’ said Jakir Hossain, president of the traders’ association of the market.
‘As customers prefer foreign goods to local products, we have no other option but to selling foreign products,’ he added.
‘Chittagong New Market is the oldest shopping mall of the city. It is affordable for all classes of people. I have been doing my shopping here since I was a schoolgirl,’ said Suraya Begum, a government official.
‘Generally the people of lower income do their shopping at Johur Hawkers Market. But the recent price hick is lowering our sell,’ said Shah Alam, owner of Chistia Garments, adding that this year seemed bad for business.
Besides, several makeshift shops have come up on the pavements of main roads where lower income group rush for their shopping.
City’s Bahaddarhat intersection, Amtoli, Badamtoli, Station Road is almost occupied by makeshift shops, contributing to the intolerable traffic congestion across the city.
