The way female artists perceive the world often gives them a unique edge in their artwork, as is evident in the ongoing group exhibition at Gallery Twenty-One at Dhanmondi. Organised by the gallery and women artists’ organisation Shako, the exhibition titled Shreyoshi showcases artworks in different styles by 11 well-known female artists of the country. All the 11 participating artists are women and the themes and elements that are depicted on their canvases vary from beautiful landscapes to female beauty and femininity.
To speak of some of the works at the exhibition, there is, to begin with, an excellent acrylic painting on nature, titled Autumn Shower by Shameem Subarna. Dominated by a hue of dark red, the painting exudes a sense of autumn rain.
Prominent artist Kanak Chapa Chakma’s signature depiction of ethnic people, especially ethnic women, is sure to arrest the eyes of the visitor. Acrylic painting Happiness in the Green, foregrounds the sensual beauty of girls in the hilly region and the atmosphere.
Naima Haque’s simple but arresting acrylic painting Mood, showing a woman’s back, deserves appreciation. Haque has simply used lines and grey colours to paint the woman.
Farida Zaman’s abstract works, Mini Karim’s colourful canvases, Farzan Islam Milky’s brass sculpture, Rebeka Sultana’s engagement with female beauty, Sulekha Chowdhury’s paintings that portray the nurturing mother nature- all deserve attention.
Inaugurated on September 12 by cultural affairs minister Asaduzzaman Noor, the exhibition will remain open for all from 12pm to 8pm till October 4.
