Dhaka based troupe Theatrewala Repertory will stage Shylock and Sycophants today at the Chittagong Shilpakala Academy as part of the ongoing Nandimukh Theatre Festival organised by the troupe marking its 22nd founding anniversary.
Hasan Shahrier has adapted the play from Shahzad Ferdous’
novel titled Shylocker Banijya Bistar.
Directed by Azad Abul Kalam, the play satirises the tendency of buying everything even human qualities like morality, kindness and fellow-feelings in a materialistic world.
In the play, a character named Shylock has been introduced as a symbol of capitalism who wants to buy everyone as his sycophants. He even wants to purchase the nature.
Being influenced by Shylock, even common people become greedy and desire to be the owner of the world; however, they don’t know that such tendency would only bring miseries to them.
The play is acted by Azad Abul Kalam, Dipak Sumon, Tomalika Karmokar, Toufiqul Islam Emon, Hasan Shahrier and others.
