Bangladesh golfer Siddikur Rahman began his World Cup of golf campaign on a quiet note after he ended round one in joint 32nd position in Melbourne on Thursday.
Siddik hit a two-over-par 73 on the opening day of the US$8 million tournament, seven shots behind joint-leaders Thomas Bjorn of Denmark and Kevin Streelman of the United States.
The 29-year-old Bangladeshi golfer crafted a good start, registering a birdie on the first hole and another birdie on the 6th hole.
Two more birdies on the 14th and 18th holes gave Siddik hope, although a bogey, a triple bogey and a double bogey on the 9th, 12th and 13th holes respectively undid all his good work.
Indian golfer Anirban Lahiri is a shot ahead of Siddik in joint-21st position, while established Australian golfer Adam Scott was a further two shots behind the Bangladeshi golfer in joint-46th position.
Fijian Vijay Singh was tied with Siddik in joint-32nd position, while Asian Tour Order of Merit leader Thailand’s Kiradech Aphibarnrat occupied joint-13th position after a par score on the opening round.
60 golfers around the world, including 13 from Asia, are participating in the World Cup of golf, which is held biannually.
The total prize pool for the event is US$8million, with $7 million for the individual event and the remainder for the team event.
