Bangladesh’s Siddikur Rahman was on joint 23rd position with a two-under-par after the opening round of the US Open Championship Qualifier which teed off at the Walton Heath Golf Club in Surrey yesterday. Siddikur is one of 81 golfers who teed off at the Surrey’s picturesque golf course to earn one of the 11 available berths for the second Major of the 2012 season, The US Open will take place in San Francisco from June 14-17.
Colin Montgomerie and Jose María Olazabal, Europe’s former and current Ryder Cup captains, were in major contention to earn berths as they carded 68 and 67 respectively at the new course.
There were better scores at the old course where South Africa’s George Coetzee, Finland’s Mikko Ilonen, Korean Sihwan Kim and Spaniard Pablo Larrazábal posted rounds of 66.
The qualifying event is played on 36 holes, over the two courses, to determine the 11 qualifiers, with a play-off held to decide the final places if necessary.
