Mabia Akhter Simanta clinched one gold and two silver medals for Bangladesh on Wednesday in the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships, now being held in Indian city of Pune.
Simanta, who lifted 176kg in 63-kg weight category, became only third Bangladeshi to claim an international gold after Mollah Sabira and Sahriar Sultana Suchi.Sabira and Suchi claimed their success in South Asian Weightlifting Championship in Nepal in 2012 in their respective weight category.
The competition is being held in three groups — senior, junior and youth and Simanta had some kind of success in all groups of the same weight group.
She lifted 78kg in snatch and 98kg in clean and jerk — in the girls’ youth 63kg category to clinch the gold medal with India and Canada winning the silver and bronze respectively.
Her two silvers came in senior and junior group of the same 63 weight category,
‘I’m feeling really proud to win gold and silver medals in such a big event for Bangladesh,’ said an elated Simanta after her event. ‘Please pray for me so that I can win more medals for my country in future,’ she said, according to a press release of Bangladesh Weightlifting Federation.
In the boys’ youth 62-kg category, Bangladesh’s Mustain Billal also clinched silver on Wednesday.
Billal lifted total 205kg — 90kg in snatch and 115kg in clean and jerk.
India won both gold and bronze medals in the event.
The six-day long competition will end on Friday.
