Peace is perhaps what this country and its people need the most at the moment. Everywhere and in all spheres of our lives, there is excessive chaos. A group of six conscientious artists have expressed their inner demand for peace through their artworks currently on display.
Their group exhibition titled Peace is being held at
Gallery Cosmos 2 at DOHS, Mohakhali. The artists are Afrozza Jamil Konka, Bipasha Hayat, Maksuda Iqbal Nipa, Rebeka Sultana, Mohammad Iqbal and Pijush Kanti Sarkar.
At a first glance, the paintings have a soothing effect through their distinctive colours. It is barely difficult to categorise the paintings under one theme though. The paintings vary from realistic, semi-realistic to semi-abstract and abstract.
Realistic paintings like Rhythm of life, Bird with Woman, Wind, and Unknown love, done in acrylic on canvass by Rebeka Sultana deserve appreciation for the impressive use of vibrant colours like yellow and red. Her canvasses highlight flamboyant female figures.
Another artist Afrozza Jamil has showcased paintings with thought-provoking themes. Her mixed media work Journey to Utopia captures the Savar tragedy. A leg under the rubble with the toe pointed towards a few painted flowers may mean that we will all learn from the tragedy and move forward to a better world.
Another painting by Jamil titled Acid, in mixed media, has a face partially blackened so as to give an impression of the trauma and stigma engulfed dark work of the acid survivors. Some crows under and around the face symbolically depict the miscreants.
Pijus Kanti Sarkar has five acrylic works on display. His paintings show the artist’s fascination to paint walls or barriers being broken. He shares with New Age that life is surrounded by obstacles, and we are supposed to break them down gradually.
The paintings on display by Bipasha Hayat, Mohammad Iqbal and Maksuda Iqbal Nipa also demand attention of the viewers.
Inaugurated by US ambassador Dan Mozena on May 24, the exhibition will be open from 11am to 7pm till June 07.
