Theatre troupe Swapnodal will pay tribute to Nobel laureate poet Rabindranath Tagore, dramatist Selim Al Deen and Indian director Badal Sircar by organising a six-day theatre festival beginning tomorrow, informed the organisers at a press conference held on Monday at the seminar room of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy.
The festival will mark 71th death anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore [6 August], 63th birth anniversary of Selim Al Deen [18 August] and 87th birth anniversary of Badal Sircar [15 July] and also 67th anniversary of Hiroshima-Nagasaki Tragedy [6 August].
The festival titled `Jugoshondhir Arun Aloye Rabindranath-Selim Al Deen-Badal Sircar Theatre Festival’ will feature six theatre productions at the Experimental Theatre Hall and Studio Theatre Hall of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy.
Swapnadal will stage Rabindranath Tagore’s poetic drama Chitrangada, Selim Al Deen’s Hargoj and Festoon-e Lekha Smriti, and Badal Sircar’s Trinsha Satabdi, which depicts the horrific consequences of dropping atomic bombs in the Japanese city Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945.
Moreover, Dhaka Theatre and Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy will respectively stage Selim Al Deen’s plays Nimajjon and Putra.
Besides, the festival will also feature poster exhibition, video screening and seminars on Hirosima and Nagasaki incidents.
A seminar, presided over by Nasiruddin Yousuff featuring life and works of Tagore, Selim Al Deen and Badal Sircar will be held on Friday. Moreover, selected parts of Selim Al Deen’s Haddahaddi and Nimmajjon, Rabindranath Tagore’s Dakghar will be presented by Swapnadal artistes on festival days at the lobby of the Experimental Theatre Hall.
This year’s festival will be dedicated to recently demised writer, playwright and filmmaker Humayun Ahmed.
Chief of Swapnadal Zahid Repon, director and deputy director of Film and Theatre department of the academy respectively Sarah Ara Mahmud and Irine Parvin Lopa, chairman of Japan-Bangla Peace Foundation Humayun Kabir Sweet, and others were present at the press conference.
