Six members of a pirate gang, including the ringleader, were killed and four others injured in a lynch-mob attack in Subarnachar upazila early Friday. One of the deceased was identified as Mohammad Selim, 40, the lynchpin of ‘Selim Bahini’ and a resident of Char Majid area. Police said locals chased a gang of 15/20 pirates when they took position on the south side of Charmajid Primary School in Char Majid area in the early hours for committing robbery in the area. They managed to catch seven of the hoodlums. Later, the angry gave them a good beating, leaving the three dead on the spot and four others injured.
On information, police recovered the bodies of the pirates and rescued the injured ones. The bodies were sent to Noakhali Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy.
Police also recovered 200 season cards (tokens for collecting tolls from fishermen), two short guns, one LG, 18 bullets, four cartridges and six sharp weapons from the spot.
Assistant police super (Sadar Circle) Niskriti Chakma said the pirate gang had long been involved in committing robbery in
the Meghna and Bamni rivers.
Officer-in-charge of Char Jabbar Police Station Mosharraf Hossain Tarafder said Selim was accused in various cases, including of murder, filed with different police stations.
Meanwhile, locals breathed a sigh of relief following the death of the ringleader of the gang.
