The legendary artist Sheikh Mohammed Sultan, better known as SM Sultan, was born on August 10 in 1923 at Narail.
Sultan, a life-long erratic, eccentric, saintly, bachelor, portrayed the common rural men and women in his colourful canvasses. What strikes most is the plethora of muscular depiction of peasants and working men and women in Sultan’s work.
Acknowledged by Cambridge University as the Man of Asia in 1982, SM Sultan was conferred with all the major civil awards of Bangladesh. He received Ekushey Padak in 1982, the Bangladesh Charu Shilpi Sangsad Award in 1986, and the Independence Day Award in 1993.
The artist breathed his last on October 10, 1994.
