The speaker, Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury, on Saturday stressed
enactment of new legislation to stop use of unparliamentary
and abusive words in parliament sessions.
‘The unparliamentary abusive and vulgar words, being used at present, must be controlled by introducing new acts,’ she said, while addressing a reception programme at Dhaka University.
Bangladesh Law Association organised the reception to the country’s first female speaker of the national parliament at Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban.
The speaker sought positive role from the lawmakers of both the ruling and the opposition parties to make the parliament effective for the sake of democracy.
Regarding her appointment as the speaker, she said many treated her as unelected, but nobody could be a speaker of parliament if he or she was not elected.
‘One can be speaker if one is member of parliament directly or from a reserved seat. . .this scope is constitutional,’ she added.
The speaker also stressed the need for women participation in the mainstream development and reducing disparity between the poor and the rich.
The association president, AKM Afzalur Rahman Monir, chaired the function, also addressed, among others, by the Supreme Court judge Mirza Hossain Haider, DU vice-chancellor AAMS Arefin Siddique, law department chairman Shahnaz Rahman and Awami League lawmaker Golam Maula Rony.
