Veteran sports journalist and former sports editor of New Age, Lenin Gani, breathed his last in London on Thursday due to heart failure. He was 46.
His family members said that Lenin had long been suffering from acute respiratory and pulmonary disease and also from hypertension and accompanying heart problems. He was undergoing treatment in London where they are permanently settled.
His condition aggravated at 4:30pm London time on Thursday and he was immediately taken to a hospital in North Hyde Park where the doctors declared him dead.
Lenin left behind his parents, three brothers including his twin brother, his wife and a daughter.
He will be buried in London on Saturday after his wife Sinthia Parvez, who was in Dhaka when her husband died, reaches the UK.
Born on December 9, 1967, Lenin began his journalistic career with the now-defunct daily Morning Sun and joined the Daily Star in 1992 as a sub-editor.
Lenin joined New Age as sports editor in 2006 and left in August 2008 to facilitate his treatment in London. He later joined Daily Sun as sports editor and was lastly involved with the online newspaper bdnews24.com as contributing editor.
Lenin was awarded by the Dhaka Reporters Unity for the best sports report in 2001.
Bangladesh Sports Journalist Association, Bangladesh Sports Press Association and Bangladesh Football Federation expressed their deep shock at the untimely death of senior sports journalist Gani.
