A total of 78 students and 6 teachers were expelled on the first day as the Secondary School Certificate (SSC) and equivalent examinations 2009 under the country’s 10 educational boards began yesterday. Reports from the official control board and UNB correspondents said the examinations, however, got off to a smooth start in a peaceful environment under strict rules enforced by the new government.
“With a very few number of expulsions of the students during the examination, the exams began in a rather peaceful environment,” a government official said.
Of the expulsions, five students got the ouster in Barisal, five in Chittagong, three in Comilla, four students and one teacher in Dhaka, eight students and one teacher in Dinajpur, one student and two teachers in Jessore, two students in Rajshahi, one student in Sylhet, and six students and two teachers under madrasa and 43 students under technical board.
Meanwhile, Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid visited five centres in the city during the examination hours.
Talking to journalists after his visit, he said, “The government took all necessary steps for holding the examinations in peaceful environment.
The environment will be continued further.”
For the first time, the results of the SSC and equivalent examinations will be published on a preset date, May 25.
A total of 10,57,704 SSC candidates from 26,239 educational institutions sat for the public examinations at 1,888 centres. The number of this year’s examinees is 44,403 higher than last year’s.
Among the examinees, 798,925 appeared for the SSC at 922 centres under eight general education boards.
Another 184,224 examinees appeared at the exams under Madrasa Education Board at 490 centres and 74,555 at SSC Vocational under Technical Education Board at 476 centres.
Some 254 candidates sat for examination from seven overseas centres.
