The government has taken steps to halt hunting of guest birds and ensure their safe, free movement for all varieties of guest birds in the country, Environment and Forests Minister told Parliament on Sunday.
“In winter season, we see arrival of some 230 types of guest birds in our country. The present government has taken steps to halt hunting them and ensure their free and safe movement,” Dr Hasan Mahmud said, responding to a scripted question of Pinu Khan (Women Seat-49).
He informed the House that the government enacted the Wildlife (Preservation and Safety) Act 2012 to make the Bangladesh Wildlife (Preservation) Act time-befitting.
“A provision has been kept in the new law for punishment of those involved in hunting the guest birds,” he said.
The Minister said that the forest department has been conducting drives routinely for stopping hunting of guest birds.
Responding to a supplementary question of Adv Tarana Halim (Women Seat-AL), he said the World Bank holds the responsibility of financial management of the Bangladesh Climate Change Resilience Fund (BCCRF). Dr Hasan Mahmud also said that there are two committees – technical committee and governing council for the fund. “So far, six projects have been approved under the fund.”
