Civil society representatives on Thursday demanded strict punishment
for tree fellers who cut down trees in the name project development
works at Purbachal and road repairing at Mirpur in Dhaka.
In a press statement, Nagarik Sanghati president ASM Atiqur Rahman and general secretary Sharifuzzaman Sharif expressed deep concern over the cutting of Mehgani and Neem trees in the capital’s Mirpur 13 water tank for road repairing.
They protested at such tree felling by development authorities such as Rajdhani Unnayan Kartipakkhya in Kaliganj and Gazipur for Purbachal project development work.
They alleged that local politicians and administration were involved in tree cutting.
Nagarik Sanghati said the Ministry of Environment and Forest finalised the draft of the Tree Conservation Act which proposed three months in jail for cutting tree without permission.
Though the government took some initiatives, the miscreants did not stop cutting trees.
They also demanded immediate approval of the draft act.
