Police arrested a private tutor here yesterday for kidnapping a girl student, which he said was an attempt to recover his loss due to the recent stockmarket plunge.
The arrestee, Abdul Mazid, 24, hails from Kutubdia upazila of Cox’s Bazar.
Mazid kidnapped his student Naima Kaiser, 8, on Thursday on her way back home from school, said Mohosin, sub-inspector (SI) of intelligence department of Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP).
The kidnapper demanded Tk 5 lakh ransom from Naima’s family over the phone and gave a private bank account number to deposit the amount.
Naima’s mother Khurshida Begum the same day filed an abduction case with Khulshi Police Station, the SI said.
With the help of the cellphone number and the account number, police of CMP intelligence department and the police station Friday evening traced the kidnapper with Naima at Rajghat of Moheshkhali, he added.
Police said Mazid confessed to the kidnapping and told them that he resorted to the crime as he lost a big amount of his investment in the share market due to the recent slump in share prices.
