Dhaka stocks gained for the second day on Thursday amid volatility as the investors still remained skeptical about the market following legal battle over securities law.
DGEN, the benchmark general index of Dhaka Stock Exchange, gained 0.72 per cent, or 34.29 points, to close at 4,734.33 points.
The bourse’s turnover inched down on Thursday to Tk 185.23 crore from that of Tk 187.28 crore on Wednesday when the DGEN gained 68.85 points.
In the last two sessions, the DGEN gained 103 points after losing 392 points in six consecutive sessions.
Market operators said majority of the investors refrained from trading due to ongoing legal battle between the Securities and Exchange Commission and the listed company directors over mandatory shareholding rule.
They said investors could not afford to go for aggressive selling of shares despite uncertainty in the market as many of them are facing yet another phase of meltdown after repeated market crashes in the last year.
Of the 261 issues traded, 193 advanced, 42 declined and 26 remained unchanged.
Among the major sectors, pharmaceuticals was the top gainer on Thursday with 1.92 per cent rise, followed by telecommunications that gained 1.72 per cent.
