The growing number of university students, who throng the Dhaka University central library every day, find it very difficult to study for lack of adequate seats.
‘Apart from the growing number of DU students, a huge number of outsiders from Dhaka College, Eden College, Begum Badrunnesa Govt Girls’ College, and other city colleges come to the DU central library to study. This put tremendous pressure on the library,’ M Ashikur Rahman, a law student, told the news agency.
Currently, around 34,000 students study at the Dhaka University. But, the university library can accommodate only about 1,200 students.
Ashikur Rahman, a student of DU law department, said many outsiders crowd the library, making it difficult for DU students to get proper benefits. The DU students have to stand in queue early in the morning to get a seat to study at the library.
‘We cannot use the library properly for lack of accommodation. If we enter the library a little late, it becomes difficult to find a seat,’ he said.
Shariful Islam, a student of DU sociology department, said if the university authorities set up a new library or impose ban on outsiders and former students from using the library, the present problem of accommodation could be resolved.
Dhaka University central library director Professor SM Javed Ahmed told the news agency that the authorities have already imposed ban on outsiders. He said, ‘In the past, outsiders were able to use the DU library without any permission. Now, it is mandatory for the library users to show their library card.’
Professor Javed, however, said former students of the university have the right to use the library as the members of DU alumni.
There are only 1,200 seats in the DU central library, he said, adding that the university authorities have a plan to expand the library in future.
