Fellows to besiege LabAid today
Several hundred students of Dhaka University on Tuesday observed hunger-strike protesting at alleged ‘wrong’ treatment of one of its students at Labaid Hospital in the capital.
The students of political science department postponed their protest in the evening after vice-chancellor AAMS Arefin Siddique assured them of placing their demand for adequate compensation for the victim to the private-run clinic.
The students, however, decided to besiege the LabAid premises today [Wednesday] to press home their demand.
The department chairman, Nurul Amin Bapari, said, ‘We express our solidarity with the demand. We must join them if the LabAid authorities do not pay heed to it tomorrow [Wednesday].’
The students also locked the department’s class rooms, teachers’ rooms and seminar libraries. No classes and examinations were held on the day.
After detection of a tumor in February, 2012, a political science fourth year student Mostafizur Rhaman Masum was undergoing treatment under supervision of a LabAid doctor Amjad Hussain who said Masum was suffering from Xanthoma. He also conducted an operation on the left leg of Masum.
He has been now diagnosed with cancer which spread all over his body, including the lungs. There is no treatment anywhere in the world for Masum, his friends said.
The teachers alleged while he was in supervision of the doctor, he was suffering from chronic disease at his heel.
But the doctor did not take care of that and released him from hospital terming the condition as ‘minor’. There was cancer which the doctor failed to notice.
Masum is now undergoing treatment at an Indian hospital in a critical condition.
His fellows and family members have demanded punishment of the hospital authorities and the physician concerned.
Earlier on August 15, 2011, founder chairman of music department of the university Mridul Kanti Chakrobarty died at LabAid for wrong treatment for which the private hospital paid Tk 50 lakh to the deceased’s family.
