Rajshahi University students on Sunday went on demonstrations on the campus, demanding that the university syndicate’s decision to execute a two-day weekly holiday should be cancelled to mitigate the session gam.
The university syndicate at a meeting on January 5 decided to implement a two-day weekly holiday for all when no classes and examinations will be held.
The students also protest at rampant increase in the admission fees realised from the freshers.
Over a hundred students under the banner of Progressive Students Alliance brought out a procession from Tukitaki Chattar on the campus and it ended at the same place in a gathering after parading the campus.
Speakers at the gathering alleged that some teachers, who were involved with private universities besides their job at RU, had pushed the authorities concerned to take the illogical decision to keep the university closed on Friday and Saturday every week.
While several departments were in grip of severe session jam, the authorities were on a move to deepen the crisis, they said, urging the authorities to revoke the decision.
The students also demanded withdrawal of all fees increased in the 2012-13 academic session.
Chhatra Front RU unit convener Sohrab Hossain, Chhatra Union RU unit president Shipon Ahmed, Chhatra Federation RU unit general secretary Utsab Mosaddek and Biplobi Chhatra Moitree president Sumon Agastin Soren also addressed the programme among others.
