Six plays, most featuring movement against the British colonial rule, were staged on the fourth day of the ongoing eight-day theatre festival at three venues of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy on Sunday.
Organised by the academy, the festival titled Swapna O Drohoer Jatiyo Natyautsab features 64 theatre plays from the Shilpakala-based and college-based theatre troupes from 64 districts.Ranisangkoil Degree College of Thakurgaon staged Danesh Upakhan at the National Theatre Hall. Written and directed by Dr Syed Redwanul Rahman, the play depicts Hazi Danesh’s rebellion during the Tebhaga Movement against the British in northern part of the country.
Written and directed by Muhammad Amin, Buno Sharer Golpo O Amra staged by Gaibandha Government University College, depicts the sufferings of common people in 1947, 1971 and in 2013 when religion and people’s religious beliefs have been exploited by extremist groups.
Swapna Bhangar Pala, written and directed by Kamruzzaman Tapu, and staged by Hazi Abed Ali College, Norshindi illustrated the struggle of jatra(folk drama) artistes.
All artistes in the productions were college students.
‘I am so glad that my dream to perform in Dhaka has finally come true. It will encourage me to move forward as a theatre artiste,’ said Obaidullah Kabir, a student of Hazi Abed Ali College.
‘Before performing at a national level festival, we held a performance in our home town. Theatre is more technically advanced here,’ said Zahangir Alam, a student of Satkhira Government College.
Other staged plays include Khela O Khela by Abul Hossain Degree College from Rajbari, Uttar Dokkhin Purbo Poshchim Charidike Jagoron by Satkhira Government College from Satkhira, Alar Ongikar by Mazida Model College from Kurigram.
