Students of Eden Girls College Dhaka on Sunday demanded death penalty of Shikdar Mahamud Alam who killed his wife Putul on May 13.
Sharifa Akhter Putul, 22, was a third year (honours) student of history
department at Eden girls’ College in Dhaka.At a human chain, the participants said for lack of proper enforcement and implementation of the existing laws, violence against women continued.
Students of Eden Girls College Dhaka formed the human chain in front of the college.
Members of parliament Fazilatunnesa and Rawshan Jahan Sathi, rights activists Rokeya Kabir, Khushi Kabir and Shirin Akhter, Eden College principal, vice-principal and all teacher and students of the college expressed their solidarity with the protest.
They urged the government to take immediate steps to check violence against women across the country.
The students also demanded exemplary punishment of Alam Shikder so that none could dare to repeat such killing.
They said Shikdar Mahamud Alam killed his wife suspecting her involvement in an extra-marital affair.
Alam took poison immediately after the incident and surrendered to Mollahat Police Station. He is now undergoing treatment at the upazila health complex under police guard.
Alam and Putul of the same village (Udaypur Daibokandi village under Mollahat upazila of the Bagerhat district) fell in love and secretly got married six months ago.
Later, their families accepted the marriage and arranged a function at the village on May 10.
