An eight-day long Sultan Mela, in celebration of the 89th birth anniversary of world famous artist SM Sultan, is going on at a full swing at Sultan Mancha in Narail Government Victoria College premises.
Different cultural groups, in association with Sultan foundation and district administration, have organised the fair to mark the birth anniversary of the renowned artist. A series of exciting events such as concerts, art exhibition, children art competition, volley ball competition, traditional games, ox fighting, local games such as kabaadi, lathikhela, kusti, hadu-du, dariabandha, ekka-dokka, bouchi, danguli, horse race have been organised to entertain the visitors everyday.
A total of 100 stalls with traditional textile and cottage industry products have been set up at the venue. A seminar presentation on Sultan’s life and works has also been arranged during the fair.
SM Sultan, a legendary artist, won several prestigious awards including Ekushey Padak in 1982, Bangladesh Charu Shilpi Sangsad Award in 1986
and Swadhinata Padak in 1993. Sultan died in Jessore in 1994. His grave lies in the yard of his own house at Masumdia village in Narail.
The fair was inaugurated by the cultural affairs minister Asaduzzaman Noor on February 25. Deputy Commissioner of Narail and president of Sultan foundation A Gaffar Khan presided over the inauguration. The fair will continue till March 4.
