Popular recitation organisation Swarachitra will pay tribute to noted poet Shamsur Rahman at a programme at the TSC Auditorium of Dhaka University at 6:00pm today. The organisation has arranged the programme in order to observe the poet’s 8th death anniversary, which fell on August 17.
‘We could not observe the poet’s death anniversary in August as the month was packed with many important events and almost all the halls were booked,’ said Mahidul Islam, noted recitation artiste and also director of Swarachitra, to New Age.
Mahidul Islam also informed that the artistes of Swarachitra will present popular poems of Shamsur Rahman in group and solo recitals at the programme, which will also include performances of guest artistes including Ashraful Alam, Belayet Hossain, Enamul Haque Babu, Rafiqul Islam, Shimul Mustafa, Hasan Arif, Ahkamullah, Iqbal Khorshed, Majumdar Biplob, Muzahidul Islam, and others.
Shamsur Rahman, dubbed as the poet of independence, was a key figure in modern Bangla poetry. He was born 1929 in Dhaka. A complete metropolitan in taste and sensibility, Rahman was one of those literary figures who set the tone and tenor of modern Bangla literature, especially poetry.
Rahman’s first collection of poems, Prothom Gaan Dwityo Mrittyur Agey was published in 1960. His later poems, published in the 60s, 70s and 80s, reflect the political awareness of the poet and the turmoil of the time. Asader Shirt, Swadhinota Tumi, Tomake Pawar Jonya He Swadhinota, to name a few, are among the treasure trove of the poet.
Shamsur Rahman, in his fifty years of literary career, authored around sixty titles including poems, novels, essays and children literature.
