Eminent poet and playwright Syed Shamsul Haque felicitated renowned thespian Ataur Rahman for giving ‘appropriate and artistic’ presentation of his plays at a seminar held on Tuesday in the seminar room of the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy.
Haque presented the felicitation lecture titled ‘Amar Natok: Ataurer Kaj’ on Ataur Rahman’s 72nd birth anniversary celebrations programme organised by Mancha Sarathi Ataur Rahman Karma Utjapon Parishad in association with Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy.
Eminent thespians like Ramendu Majumdar, M Hamid, Lucky Enam, Keramat Moula and professor Abdus Selim also delivered speeches greeting Ataur Rahman on his birthday.
Haque in his written speech focused on Ataur Rahman’s kaleidoscopic journey as a pioneering activist in the theatre arena in Bangladesh, which got momentum after the independence in 1971.
‘He has directed most of my plays and those were challenging to stage. Credit goes to him for giving artistic expressions to those plays, which have also attained huge popularity,’ said, Syed Shyasul Haque, whose nine plays were directed by Rahman.
‘He showed courage of directing my theatre of absurd Irsha and the war of independence based play Awaj Pawa Jay. My other plays, directed by him, also attained popularity, which, I think, might not possible without him’, Haque added.
Claiming Ataur Rahman the dearest friend Haque said, ‘Ataur Rahman helped me when I needed him most. We have traveled a long way together in theatre and wish this collaboration continues in future.’
‘Theatre is my life. Uncountable numbers of memories of mine are related with theatre, especially with my friends and peers present here,’ a delighted Ataur Rahman said.
Ataur Rahman has directed 34 plays by the great playwrights of the world including Macbeth, , Galileo, Mile Post, Godor Protikhai, ‘Raktokarabi’, ‘Banglar Mati Banglar Jal’ and others.
