Shopping centers in Sylhet are all abuzz with shoppers amid inclement weather on Wednesday, only a day ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr, the largest religious festival of the Muslims.
Almost all fashion houses, shopping malls and shops of dresses, footwears, cosmetic goods and imitated ornaments as well as beauty parlours and saloons in the city were seen packed with consumers since the morning, the market sources said.
Most of the shop owners, from the stylish fashion houses to the footpath shops, have expressed their satisfaction about the consumer turnout and sales on the day.
Shahin, a salesperson of a readymade dress house at Blue Water Shopping Center in the city’s Zindabazar, said their business was brisk on Wednesday amid torrential rain as the Eid day was knocking on the door.
A small section of businesspersons, however, expressed dissatisfaction because of the rain hampered their business.
Abdul Quayum, a clothes store owner at Hasan Market in the city, said many of the clients were forced to stay long in the shops during the rain, as they could not go out.
Non-resident Bangladeshi Abdul Malik, who came from United Kingdom to celebrate Eid-ul-Ftr with his parents, said his children could not do their shopping freely because of bad weather.
Sylhet Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s director Tarun Miah said the shoppers could buy their necessary products in a congenial atmosphere, if the weather was comfortable.
Talking to New Age, Sylhet Met Office deputy director Abu Syed Chowdhury told New Age that the rainfall between Tuesday and Wednesday in the region was impact of the ongoing monsoon.
‘The rainy weather may continue for several more days or can take a move towards shinny weather within 1 or 2 days next,’ he added.
