The Chief Metropolitan Court in Sylhet starts its operation on Sunday with an attempt to reduce congestion of cases in the district judge court.
Sylhet District Judge Court additional public prosecutor Shamsul Islam has told New Age that judges and necessary manpower have already been appointed to operate the CMC.
‘Activities of the court will start with the joining of the judges concerned next week as all other preparatory work to launch judicial activities have already been completed,’ he added.
Shamsul said all judiciary works in cases filed with six police stations under the Sylhet Metropolitan Police would be conducted by CMC and the process of transferring the cases has already started.
‘CMC was supposed to start functioning on Thursday with the joint-chief metropolitan judge joining the court.
Because of the consecutive general strike he could not join the office, he added.
The law ministry in a circular issued on Tuesday transferred the Sirajganj District Children and Woman Repression Tribunal judge Akbar Hossain Mridha as chief metropolitan judge in Sylhet and the Dhaka district joint sessions court judge Mohammad Iftekhar bin Aziz was also transferred as the additional chief metropolitan judge here, sources in the public prosecution office said.
The law, justice and parliamentary affairs ministry on April 21 this year had made the decision of setting metropolitan court in five cities, including Sylhet, in the country.
Following the ministry order, three court rooms were set at a building of the district judge and sessions court to be used as the newly established CMC, the sources said.
Meanwhile, officials and employees against 28 posts approved by the law ministry have also been appointed, sources concerned said.
Being contacted, Sylhet Judge Court public prosecutor Misbah Uddin Siraj told New Age that the ongoing sluggishness in trial procedures due to the congestion of cases and shortage of judges in the region would be reduced once the CMC starts operating.
‘Judicial activities in all kind of cases filed with the police stations under Sylhet Metropolitan Police will be run now by the CMC,’ he added.
