Sylhet experienced this year’s highest rainfall till date with over 247mm of rain falling in the nine hours preceding 3:00pm yesterday,
states the regional Met office.
Heavy rainfall since early morning caused waterlogging in different areas from two to five hours till 5:00pm, leading to a low presence of students in educational institutions and vehicles on the roads.
The affected areas include Electric Supply Road, Loharpara, Hawapara, Darga Mohalla, Sonarpara, Tantipara, Sagardighirpar, Mirzajangal, Bagbari, Pathantola, Rainagar, Jatarpur, Taltola, Bhatalia, Bilopar, Barobazar, Khasdobir, Uposhahar, Teroratan and Masimpur.
The Met office In-charge Sayeed Ahmed Chowdhury said the region’s highest rainfall last year was 233mm on October 2.
Sylhet City Corporation Chief Engineer Nur Azizur Rahman acknowledged that grabbing of the city’s nine streams, poor drainage and lack of resources to regularly clean the drains led to the waterlogging.
He, however, urged all to raise awareness on preventing discarding waste out in the open.
