Hindus in Sylhet held demonstrations on Wednesday demanding immediate cancellation of the proposed draft ‘Temple property management, recovery and protection law-2013’.
Several hundred people of the community under the banner of ‘divisional committee for monastery-temple property protection and regaining’ brought out a procession from in front of the ISCON Mandir at Mirabazar in the city in the morning, held a rally at Court Point at noon and then handed a memorandum to the deputy commissioner to push for the demand.
Speakers at the rally termed the proposed draft law ‘against the interest of the Hindus’.
They claimed that dishonest and affluent quarters would get scope to grab the property of Hindu temples in the country if the proposed law was approved.
District unit president of Hindu-Buddhist Oikya Parishad Biraj Madhav Chakrabarti, city unit general secretary of Puja Celebration Committee, Rajat Kanti Bhattacharya, and city president of Hindu-Buddhist Oikya Parishad Mrittunjay Dhar, among others, also addressed the rally.
