Theme Solution and Bangladesh Mobile Phone Business Association are going to organise International Telecom Fair 2009 in Sylhet in April 1-9 aiming to increase the number of cellphone users and businesspeople in the region, the organisers said on Sunday.
‘This is the first time such a fair will be held in Sylhet. Our main aim is to increase the number of mobile phone users and businesspeople in the country, particularly in Sylhet,’ BMBA president M Nizam Uddin Jitu told a news conference at the National Press Club.
Finance minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith will inaugurate the fair at the Hafiz Complex as the chief guest of the inaugural session, with chief whip of parliament Abdus Shahid, Sylhet mayor Badar Uddin Ahmed Kamran, and former chairman of Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission Syed Margub Morshed present as special guests, Nizam said.
Mobile phone operator companies, PSTN operator companies, mobile phone manufacturers and importers, mobile phone accessories importers, and educational institutions on telecommunications will participate in the fair, he said.
Extreme Management is the event management partner of the organisers.
Abul Kashem Ahmed, first vice-president of the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry and adviser of the BMBA, said at present there were four crore mobile users in the country, which would go up to five to six crore in a year or two.
‘Our mobile industry is 100 per cent import-oriented. One of the aims of our fair will be to encourage local business people to set up mobile set manufacturing or assembling plants to save foreign currency,’ he said.
Margub Morshed, also the chief adviser of BMBA, said in future they would arrange such fairs in Chittagong and other parts of the country.
