The chairman of Westmont Power (Bangladesh) Ltd, Kazi Tajul Islam Farook, yesterday petitioned Tejgaon police station for withdrawing the extortion case he filed against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Amid a latest change of wind on the political front, he took the cue from another business tycoon, Azam J Chowdhury, who also backtracked on the first case that had landed the former, premier in prison.
On April 9 last year, the Westmont boss filed the Tk 3-crore extortion case against the Awami League chief under non-bailable section of the penal code. Tajul complained of extortion and abuse of power by Hasina in 1998 when she was prime minister.
The case is now under investigation stage.
Retracting his allegation, Farook at a press conference told the media that he had filed the extortion case against Hasina ‘because of an adverse situation’.
“It was uncalled for and unexpected,” he said in renunciation of his litigation that had incidentally taken place at the time of crackdown on the political arena following the 1/11 changeover.
The press conference was held at a Gulshan restaurant after submitting the withdrawal of application with the Tejgaon police station.
In a surprise move earlier on December 14, after long eighteen months, business-tycoon Azam J Chowdhury drove to the ministry of home affairs with a prayer for withdrawing his Tk 3-crore extortion case against Sheikh Hasina that had landed her in prison.
The trial in this extortion case is now stalled following a High Court order, following the turnaround from the purge with the start of election process in the country.
