Opening batsman Tamim Iqbal was named vice-captain of the national side for the upcoming home series against Sri Lanka, said a Bangladesh Cricket Board press release on Thursday.
The 24-year-old left-handed batsman will begin his second stint as vice-captain, with his previous tenure spanning for 10 months from December 2010-September 2011.
The southpaw will be looking to make amends this time as his previous term ended in a bitter experience.
With Sakib al Hasan as captain, Bangladesh toured Zimbabwe three years ago in July for a solitary Test and five one-day internationals. Even though Bangladesh were making a comeback to the Test arena after 14 months, Zimbabwe themselves were returning to Test cricket after a self-imposed six-year exile.
Bangladesh suffered a torrid time in both formats of the game, losing the one-off Test and the five-match ODI series 3-2. In the aftermath of the tour to the African nation, both Sakib and Tamim were sacked as captain and vice-captain respectively.
The BCB also decided to renew the contracts of the contracted cricketers for six months, with the previous deals expiring on December 31 last year. The contracted players’ bonus payments were also increased.
There was also a change in the number of cricketers who were contracted to the BCB, with 12 now in agreement with cricket’s governing body instead of 15 previously.
The contracts of Jahirul Islam, Elias Sunny, Abul Hasan and Shafiul Islam were not renewed, while Robiul Islam was a new addition to the list. Opener Anamul Haque, who was recently axed from the national set-up, retained his contract.
The contracts of 100 first-class cricketers will also run out by the end of this month. Improved contracts will be offered after the selectors and cricket operations committee are done assessing the performance of every player.
It was also decided that former national fielding coach Mohammed Salahuddin will be the new assistant coach of Bangladesh.
The contracts of game development coaches were also extended by six months.
BCB elite panel umpire Tanvir Ahmed will officiate in the West Indian domestic first-class competition in March this year according to an umpire-exchange programme between the BCB and the West Indies Cricket Board.
