Bangladesh Finished Leather, Leather Goods and Footwear Exporters’ Association plans to sign an agreement soon with the Bangladesh Small and Cottage Industries Corporation as part of the shifting process of Hazaribagh’s tannery industries to Savar. Newly elected president of the association M Abu Taher said this at a function in connection with inauguration of a three-day international fair titled ‘LEATHERTECH Bangladesh 2013’ at the city’s Bangabandhu International Conference Centre on Thursday.
Industries minister Dilip Barua spoke on the occasion as the chief guest.
Leather Goods and Footwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association of Bangladesh vice-president Nasir Khan and Bangladesh Tanners Association general secretary Abdul Hai also addressed the function.
Speaking on the occasion, Dilip Barua said the government had given special emphasis on green industries and green products for sustainable industrialisation.
‘We’re working for setting up the Savar Industrial Estate spending Tk 1,078 crore. It would be equipped with modern machinery and an environment-friendly industrial zone,’ said the minister.
He said the estate will protect the city dwellers from waste pollution from Hazaribagh’s tannery industries set up haphazardly.
The minister called upon all stakeholders and entrepreneurs to supplement the government efforts in shifting the half-a-century-old tannery industry in the greater interest of the country.
Apart from the hosts, India, China, Korea, Hong Kong, Turkey, Singapore, Japan and Italy have put on display an array of leather products, leather technology, chemical and accessories in the three-day expo, arranged by ASK Trade and Exhibitions.
