The Bangladesh Nationalist Party has asked one of its policymakers, Chowdhury Tanveer Ahmed Siddique, to explain why action will not be taken against him for breaching party discipline and defaming the party chief.
The party’s joint secretary general Nazrul Islam Khan on Wednesday told New Age that the show-cause notice was served to Tanveer Tuesday night.
The party’s standing committee Tuesday night decided to issue a show-cause notice to Tanveer, who is also a member on the committee, in keeping with Section 5Gha of the party constitution. He was asked to explain the matter in 72 hours.
The standing committee sat at an emergency meeting, after Tanveer’s son had levelled allegations again the BNP chief, at the party chairperson’s office at Gulshan with Khaleda Zia in the chair. The meeting continued for four hours. All but Tanveer, Moudud Ahmed and Abdul Matin Chowhdury were present.
The party’s vice-chairman MK Anwar and the chairperson’s adviser TH Khan also attended the meeting on special invitation.
Tanveer’s son Chowdhury Irad Ahmed Siddiqui on Monday claimed Khaleda had demanded Tk 5 crore from him for the party fund for nominating him as the mayoral candidate in the Dhaka City Corporation polls.
Irad at a briefing at his father’s house at Gulshan said he had met Khaleda and showed his interest in contesting the mayoral polls as the BNP’s candidate.
Irad had branded the mayor, Sadeque Hossain Khoka, former mayors Mirza Abbas, of the BNP, and Mohammad Hanif, of the Awami League, as ‘corrupt’ persons who ‘failed to discharge their duties.’
Irad’s statement made in presence of Tanveer antagonised the leaders and activists of the party.
Almost all leaders present at Tuesday’s meeting demanded action against Tanveer while a section of party activists burnt effigies of Tanveer and Irad in front of the office at Gulshan.
Tanveer came to be criticised by his party colleagues for floating a proposal to make Khaleda ‘lifetime leader of the party’ on the September 11, 2008 evening after the military-controlled interim government of Fakhruddin Ahmed had released her from prison in the morning.
When asked about the notice of the party and the statement of his son, Tanveer Wednesday evening said, ‘We do not have any comments. I will report to the chairperson and the secretary general only.’
