United Nations Assistant Secretary-General for Political Affairs Oscar Fernández-Taranco has submitted a report on his recent Bangladesh visit to the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. Taranco visited Bangladesh from December 6 to December 11 in an effort to resolve the political impasse in the country over the poll-time governance issue. A source familiar with the UN activities in Bangladesh told The Independent that “UN Assistant Secretary-General Taranco has recently submitted the report on his recent Dhaka visit to his boss, Ban Ki-moon.”
“In his report, Taranco emphasized that UN should stay engaged with the stakeholders in Bangladesh,” said the source without elaborating further.
While in Dhaka, Taranco held a series of meetings the prime minister, the opposition leader, the foreign minister and foreign secretary, the chief election commissioner, a number of advisers to the prime minister and to the opposition leader, diplomatic community, international community as well as leaders of major political parties and civil society representatives.
During the UN assistant secretary general’s stay in the capital, two meeting took place between representatives of the Awami League and the BNP to discuss the ongoing political impasse. A third meeting was held on December 13 after Taranco left the country.
