Bangladesh paceman Taskin Ahmed’s chance of featuring in the ongoing ICC World Twenty20 is hanging in a balance despite the Bangladesh Cricket Board seeking a review on his bowling ban.
The BCB on Monday sought a review of his ban and said they are trying to expedite the process of hearing so that Taskin could be reintegrated into the team at some stage during the tournament.
BCB’s cricket operation chairman Akram Khan said that they are yet to receive any response though they are keeping their fingers crossed about one of their leading pace bowlers.
‘We did not receive any kind of response from the ICC until now regarding Taskin,’ Akram told New Age on Monday. ‘We are waiting anxiously to have some kind of response as we believe his action is very much legal.
‘It is a blow that is hard for us to endure and as a result our board president acted so promptly in this issue,’ he said.
Earlier BCB chief executive Nizamuddin Chowdhury told New Age that they are trying hard to get some kind of a result from ICC regarding Taskin as soon as possible.
‘Our Board president has already spoken to the ICC chairman and chief executive officer over the matter,’ said Nizamuddin.
‘They gave us some feedback and on the basis of that we have sought a review of Taskin’s ban under the ICC regulation. We are trying to expedite the process of hearing.’
There is no specific timeframe for a review hearing, but cricket analysts in Dhaka said the process may take at least seven days. Bangladesh fielded both Saqlain Sajib and Shuvagata Hom, who joined the team as replacements in Bangalore, against Australia on Monday.
If Taskin’s review is successful, one of them has to be withdrawn from the squad, said the analysts.
‘In that case Bangladesh have to appeal to the tournament technical committee to reintegrate to the team,’ said former national captain ASM Roquibul Hasan. ‘I am not sure if it had happened ever.’
The BCB appeared to have accepted the fate of Sunny, who was also banned by the ICC, but decided to leave no stone unturned for Taskin.
Bangladesh Team manager Khaled Mahmud informed that Sunny is expected to leave Bangalore today while they are keeping Taskin back in Bangalore so that they can use him as soon as they receive a positive result.
‘We don’t know anything about Taskin whether we will have him or not so we are keeping him back for the time being,’ said Mahmud.
