The National Board of Revenue chairman Ghulam Hussain on Sunday said that the current deadline for submitting income tax returns would not be extended further.
The extended time frame for filing returns is set to expire on November 2.
Taxpayers can visit the tax offices if they face any complexities in filing returns within the deadline, he said at a launching ceremony of Tax Guide-2014-2015 at NBR conference room.
Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry published the guide incorporating changes regarding income tax, value-added tax and customs duty in the budget for the current fiscal year.
The revenue board has already extended the deadline by more than one month due to poor response from the taxpayers within the original deadline of September 30.
According to Income Tax Ordinance-1984, individual taxpayers are supposed to file their returns within July 1 to September 30 if the NBR does not extend the deadline.
A taxpayer, however, can personally apply for extension of the deadline citing appropriate reasons and deputy commissioners of taxes can give him a three-month extension for filing the return.
Joint commissioner of taxes may also allow three more months to a taxpayer for submission of income tax return, according to the ordinance.
Currently, there are around 18 lakh valid taxpayer identification number holders in the country and the revenue board expects that more than 14 lakh taxpayers will submit income tax returns, Ghulam said at the programme.
The NBR will arrange income tax fair at Upazila level in future in cooperation with the DCCI to create awareness among the people in paying taxes, he said.
DCCI president Mohammad Shahjahan Khan, vice-president KH Shahidul Islam, directors Haider Ahmed Khan, Abul Hossain, Nesser Maksud Khan, Humayun Rashid, DCCI secretary AHM Rezaul Kabir, among others, were present at the programme.
DCCI will distribute the tax Guide free of cost among its members. The guide can also be bought from DCCI office at a cost of Tk. 300.
