The examinations scheduled to begin on Wednesday in all the polytechnic institutes of the country, expecting the Rajshahi Polytechnic Institute, were held peacefully.
The agitating students sat for the final examinations after their demand for change in the referred exams system was met, the Bangladesh Technical Education Board chairman, Nitai Chandra Sutradhar, told New Age.
Demanding change in the referred exams system, the students of at least twelve polytechnic institutes across the country on Tuesday took the streets and vandalised campuses, leaving more than 200 people, including students, pedestrians and policemen, injured.
The students on the day also threatened to boycott the final examinations if their demands were not met by February 15.
With about 80,000 students, the 48 government and 130 non-government polytechnic institutes courses across the country are offering diploma in engineering.
‘The demand of the students has been met. An 11-memebr committee headed by director curriculum of my board has been formed to preview the exams rules of 2005,’ the board chairman said, adding, ‘The committee has been given 15 days to submit the report.’
‘The students demanded that they should be given chance to take the exams at least three times as a regular examinee, instead of two times which was introduced in 2006, but I saw no protest from the students in the past three years,’ he said, adding, ‘I see no justification of such vandalism three years after the system was introduced.’
‘If a student of Dhaka Education Board become unsuccessful in one or two subjects in the SSC or HSC exams, he or she can sit for the exams for three times as an irregular examinee. And the word ‘irregular’ is mentioned in the certificate of such students.’
‘Although students of my board enjoy more facilities in this regard in comparison with other general education board, they want more facilities,’ he added.
