Three piracy suspects, including alleged ringleader Kalu, were killed and six policemen were injured in a ‘gunfight between the police and pirates’ at Subarnachar upazila in Noakhali on early Friday.
The deceased were identified as Kalu, 35, Ripon, 28, and Kalu’s body guard Rubel, 27.
The police said that they also recovered two guns, five bullets and local weapons from the spot.
Char Jabbar police station officer-in-charge AKM Enamul, inspector Md Faruk, subinspector Liton, constable Saiful, Rejaul Karim and Abul Hossain were injured in the gunfight, the police said.
The superintendent of police in Noakhali, Anisur Rahaman, said that they got information that Kalu was staying with his associates near Alamin fishery project near Bhuiyarhat of Subarnachar upazila and planning a piracy in Meghna River.
The police raided the area near about 12.30am.
As Kalu and his associates sensed the presence of the police, they opened fire at the police who also retaliated with firing, Enamul said.
Kau was facing 15 cases on various charges including murder, rape, robbery in different upazilas in Noakhali and Lakshmipur, said Enamul.
