New Zealand were still nine runs short of the target when Williamson heaved Shafiul Islam into the hands of Rokibul Hasan. With the last wicket, on any other day, this would just have been a regulation, if rare, Bangladesh victory. But yesterday, in the fading light at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur, this meant so much more.
Bangladesh have been playing ODI cricket for nearly 24 years. It is a period that has largely been one of suffering. But with one simple catch in the deep, all those years of hurt evaporated in a whiff.
With the first ever series victory over a top ranked opposition, yesterday’s success was the moment every fan and player had been waiting for; this is the zenith for the Tigers.
Thus, we at The Daily Star Sport, congratulate the Bangladesh cricket team on their crowning achievement.
Well done Tigers!
