Only 37 lawmakers of the ninth parliament, including leader of the house Sheikh Hasina, opposition leader Khaleda Zia, and 15 ministers, have refrained from availing themselves the facility of importing duty-free vehicles. The state has waived a total duty of around Tk 1,123 crore on vehicles imported by 315 lawmakers, including 37 ministers, under the facility, finance minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith told the House on Monday.
Muhith is also one of the ministers who have not enjoyed the privilege.
The other cabinet members who have not availed themselves of the facility are agriculture minister Matia Chowdhury, LGRD minister Syed Ashraful Islam, education minister Nurul Islam Nahid, foreign minister Dipu Moni, post and telecoms minister Sahara Khatun, social welfare minister Enamul Haque Mostafa Shahid, civil aviation minister Faruk Khan, commerce minister GM Quader, food minister Abdur Razzaque, land minister Rezaul Karim Hira, energy and power state minister Enamul Huq, LGRD state minister Jahangir Kabir Nanak, state minister for health Mujibur Rahman Fakir, and state minister for religious affairs M Shahjahan Mia.
Former communications minister Syed Abul Hossain and former state minister for home Tanzim Ahmed Sohel also have not taken advantage of the facility.
Of the Awami League MPs, M Zakir Hossain, Ishaq Hossain Talukder, SK Abu Baker, Narayan Chandra Chanda, Shawkat Momen Shahjahan, Abdus Salam, Rebeka Momen, Nazmul Hasan Papan, Shafiqur Rahman Chowdhury, Syed Mohsin Ali, M Abdul Latif, Zobeda Khatun, Sadhana Haldar, Nur-e-Hasna Lily Chowdhury, Hasina Mannan, and Pinu Khan also avoided enjoying the
privilege.
Of the main opposition BNP lawmakers, Salauddin Quader Chowdhury, Barkatullah Bulu, and Shah Mofazzal Hossain Kaikobad have refrained from using the facility.
Both the MPs of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, AHM Hamidur Rahman Azad and ANM Shamsul Islam, and Bangladesh Jatiya Party MP Andaleeve Rahman availed themselves of the privilege.
