Rajshahi City Corporation and UPPRP jointly organised the cheque distribution ceremony on the premises of Balazan Nessa Girls High School in the city on Friday.
The UPPRP, an anti-poverty scheme, is being implemented in the city since July 2008 with financial and technical support
from UNDP, UKaid and UNhabitat for improving the livelihood condition of the slum households especially women and children.
Rajshahi mayor AHM Khairuzzaman Liton distributed the grants as the chief guest saying substantial and sustainable promotion of the goat
farming is very effective for eradicating urban poverty alongside meeting up protein deficiency of the poor and distressed community.
He observed boosting production of the domestic animal especially goat could be the effective means of fulfilling the major protein demand of the distressed community.
The slum households should come forward to promote the potential sector in order to increase meat and milk production through best uses of the existing natural resources.
Mayor Liton said the 98 square-kilometre city area is the home of around eight lakh populations and around three lakh of
them are poor and extreme poor categories who needed special support for uplifting their living condition.
