Water bill worth about Tk 4 crore from different public and private organisations and individuals remains unpaid to the Khulna Water Supply and Sewerage Authority.
Official sources said despite servicing notices earlier, the KWASA could not collect the outstanding water bills from a number of organisations and individuals.
Different public and private establishments, educational institutions and individuals owe this large amount of water bills to the KWASA, the sources said.
The amount continues to swell as the organisations and individuals concerned have not paid their bills for the last seven months, putting the KWASA into deep fund crisis, they added.
Currently, the KWASA is suffering severe fund shortage for non-payment of water bills and as a result, its service to the city dwellers is being hampered, officials said.
If the outstanding bills remain unpaid for long, the KWASA would soon face severe problem in payment of monthly salaries to its employees, they added.
Of the public organisations, Khulna Development Authority owe Tk 15,66,825, Khulna Public Works Department–2 Tk 2,61,135 and executive engineers of sewerage pump No 2, 3, 4 of WDB and Khalishpur Housing executive engineer office Tk 3,21,600, Khulna divisional commissioner office, executive engineer office of PWD-2 and Khulna Medical College Hospital Tk 29,32,100, 24 primary schools Tk 6,38,135, PWD-3 office Tk 2,11,000, Khulna Textile Mills Ltd Tk 4,28,600, Daulatpur Agriculture Training Center Tk 1,41,700, Regional Lok Proshashan Kendra Tk 6,04,300, Social Welfare Department office Tk 12,327, Nurses’ Training Center Tk 45,645, Khulna Metal Industries Tk 22,260, Khulna Zila Krira Sangstha Tk 43,365, BIWTA Tk 24,750 and Bangladesh Match Company Ltd Tk 34,980, Horticulture Centre deputy inspector Tk 4,200 and residence of PWD-2 executive engineer Tk 30,520.
Of the private establishments, Khulna Shishu Hospital owe Tk 1,56,400, Victoria Primary School Tk 11,640, Muslim Sporting Club Tk 13,840, Law College Tk 11,640, School Health Clinic Tk 11,890, Khulna Shishu Vidlaya Tk 15,610, Baniakhamar Forkania Madrasah Tk 7,240, Pallimangal Shamshul Ulum Hafezia Madrasah Tk 13,890, Khulna District Ainjibi Samity Tk 9,588 and Hotel Amina Tk 15,200.
The KWASA serviced notices to the individuals and organisations concerned several times, asking them to pay their outstanding bills but they still remain defiant.
The KWASA deputy managing director, Md Jaglul Haider, told New Age that earlier, they had sent demand notices to the organisations and individuals concerned.
‘As there was no response, we later asked them to pay the bill through advertisements published on different local newspapers and announcement through PA system.
As a last resort, the KWASA issued notices on July 23, giving three-week ultimatum to pay the outstanding bill, he said adding, ‘If they fail to comply with the deadline, their water supply connections would be snapped.’
