Workers’ leaders at a discussion said that the trade union movement is waning day by day and leaders like Saifuddin Ahmed Manik are needed to establish the rights of the workers in the country.
Addressing a meeting organised on the occasion of the first death anniversary of the veteran trade union leader, the leaders said that the Saifuddin Manik pioneered the movement for establishing workers’ rights when all the workers’ organisations failed to do so in the Pakistan era.
The Bangladesh Trade Union Centre organised the meeting held at the Liberation War Museum in Segun Bagicha on Wednesday afternoon with its acting president, Shahidullah Chowdhury, in the chair.
The meeting was addressed by AK Mahibullah, Javed Hossain, Dewan Mohammad Ali, Abul Kalam Azad, Subrata Chowdhury, Mesbahuddin Ahmed, Abdul Kader Howladar, Roy Ramesh Chandra, Moniruzzaman and Wazedul Islam Khan, along with others.
The speakers said that Saifuddin Ahmed Manik did not bring politics into the workers’ movement and he formed the Sramik Karma-chary Oikya Parishad by uniting the workers’ leaders with different political beliefs.
Manik felt the inclusion of women leaders would gear up the trade union movement and he was responsible for the inclusion of many women in the leadership of trade unions, they said.
The speakers said that the best way to honour Saifuddin Ahmed Manik would be to ensure honest and sincere leadership.
